Commentary

There were a lot of mistakes on this gown. Unfortunately, I don’t have images to help illustrate the mistakes, so please use your imagination!

 Bodice:

~ This I mistakenly boned right across the neckline! I eventually had to “bend” the horizontal bone on the neckline to ensure it fitted properly.

~ The bodice was also far too loose. It became rather painful after a while. I thought it was tight when I first wore it but I didn’t know the golden rule then – make your bodice slightly too tight and it will stretch to fit!

~ The torso was a bit too long over my back waist which messes up the silhouette a bit.

 Skirt:

~ By and large I was very pleased with this skirt. It was very full and swirly and very comfy to wear except the waist line.  I pleated the skirt and stuffed it inside the waist band creating a band about an inch thick! That messed up the silhouette too! I have since discovered how to cartridge pleat and to pleat to the base of a waist band!

 Sleeves:

~ Initially, I wanted to add two velvet ribbon braids in a tram line down the back of the sleeves but ran out of velvet and time!

~ The sleeves weren’t padded and one wasn’t lined (one sleeve was stitched together in the car on the way to Kentwell from South Wales!). The lining problem was eventually rectified with calico which also gave the sleeves body.

~ I now don’t fasten cuffs with velvet ribbon ties! They insist on undoing and attract every bit of fluff going!

~ And I wish I had had the time to make a nice pair of crisp white, lace edged cuffs!

 Coif:

~ This really needed a cap or attifet in the same fabric as the gown over the coif. Otherwise it was rather sweet! Sadly, since it was made, the cotton has rotted and it is now no more!

 Ruff:

~ This lived up to its name – it was rough! Enough said!

 Shoes:

~ I didn’t have time to make a pair of shoes (and didn’t have the expertise either!). Nor did I have the money to buy a pair. So I used a pair of ballet pumps for outside wear! I’m glad I can now afford to buy reproduction shoes!
